Crossrail C510 – Whitechapel to Liverpool St

Location: Whitechapel, London
Value: £3.8m
Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty Morgan Sindall Vinci JV
Client: Crossrail Ltd
Sector: Rail

Scope of works

Kilnbridge utilised multiple specialist concrete cutting methodologies to create openings (adits) in the completed tunnel shaft walls between Whitechapel and Liverpool Street to link the tunnels and newly formed shafts. There were 19 adit formations in 5 locations along the length of the tunnel which ranged from 5m to 13m in diameter and 1.2m to 2.4m in thickness. The overall programme for these works spanned 16 months.

The general methodology to form the adits consisted of a staged sequence involving stitch drilling around the perimeter followed by wire sawing the infill into 5 tonne sections. These sections were then removed from the in-situ location utilising a formed bund reduced at each stage to suit the level of the works. Cut sections were crane lifted as work progressed to remove from site.

These works required in excess of 5,000m of stitch drilling and approximately. 2,000m² of wire sawing.

Challenges / Achievements

  • Over 1,000m³ of in-situ concrete removed
  • 100% diversion from landfill of all controlled demolition arisings
