Value: £20m+ (Ongoing)
Main Contractor: Costain
Client: Network Rail
Sector: Rail

Scope of works

This project is part of Network Rail’s £150m redevelopment of Gatwick Airport station to create a safer and more convenient interchange between the station platforms and Gatwick International Airport. Kilnbridge’s scope included:

  • Demolition of existing Network Rail overbridges and structures
  • Design, manufacture and installation of new concourse structure adjacent to the existing station entrance building to future-proof the station capacity
  • Construction of new accommodation building for Network Rail staff
  • Construction of additional access structure (including step free access facilities) from the platforms to the existing Station Building
  • Improvements to the facilities within the existing space frame structure to allow the upgrade of the M&E services.

Challenges / Achievements

  • Developing methodologies and design that allows installation to continue in a manner that can ensure the safe ongoing operation of the adjacent rail.
  • Managing the complex interface between the structural package and the envelope package to ensure the differential tolerances do not compromise the end product and cater for all expected movement of the structure
