BBC Television Centre

Location: Shepherd’s Bush, London
Value: £6.1m
Main Contractor: Mace
Client: Stanhope

Scope of works

Kilnbridge were a key member of the delivery team at the redevelopment of the Grade II listed BBC Television Centre Helios building. Working in collaboration with all stakeholders including English Heritage, Kilnbridge carried out non-invasive temporary works to stiffen the building during the renovation.

Kilnbridge were also responsible for the delicate structural alteration package allowing the reassignment of the building to modern requirements while retaining many of the structure’s iconic features. This involved bespoke strengthening and bracing works to enable the installation of two additional floors of penthouse apartments.

The building, constructed circa 1950, is Grade II listed and comprised of a steel frame encased in concrete. The additional strengthening works merged the original structural steel rivet and cleat connections with modern welded and bolted techniques. The allowed the building to be opened up in order to house spacious modern luxury apartments within a traditional façade.
