Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station Dry Fuel Storage Facility

Location: Leiston, Suffolk
Value: £6m
Main Contractor: Vinci Construction
Client: EDF Energy
Sector: Energy

Scope of works

The Dry Fuel Storage Building was the first British dry fuel store comprising a seismically qualified reinforced concrete foundation slab cast at ground level.

The slab is approximately 114m long by 60m wide and is covered by a structural steel superstructure. The building provides storage space for 143 HI-STORM casks directly supported by the slab with a central aisle to allow a lifting transporter to freely access each row of casks.

Kilnbridge’s scope included all civils and reinforced concrete works including an engineered sub-base fill and the construction of approximately 5,000m³ of concrete raft.

The raft was designed and constructed in accordance with the ACI codes for Nuclear Safety Related Concrete Structures and with the ability to withstand seismic loads, elevated temperatures, heavy plant loads and 100 years design life.

Challenges / Achievements
