Location: Southwark, London
Value: £4.2m
Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty
Client: Network Rail

Scope of works

Blackfriars Station was redeveloped to provide better and improved interchange services between National Rail and London Underground for its 44,000 daily passengers.

Kilnbridge were appointed to construct the reinforced concrete structures to the new South Station and associated complex structural strengthening works to the existing bridge, abutments and arches.

Kilnbridge completed the construction of a reinforced concrete box structure for the new South Station over three levels; basement, mezzanine and track level slab. The works were carried out in three phases to allow Thameslink to continue full operations during the construction works.

The project involved strengthening the existing bridge structure and the installation of new drainage through and adjacent to the existing bridge foundations including associated temporary works.

Challenges / Achievements

  • Working collaboratively with stakeholders to phase the works allowing for the train services to continue uninterrupted
  • Development of a lightweight structural solution to overcome restricted load capacity on existing structures
