Westfield London Enabling Works

Location: Stratford, London
Value: £1.7m
Main Contractor: Kilnbridge
Client: Westfield Group
Sector: Retail

Scope of works

The shopping centre is home to numerous anchor tenants and designer brands and a hugely popular and busy destination for shoppers all year round. When units are being refurbished or re-branded works must take place in the live environment of the operational shopping centre.

This project involved the strip-out of 6,000 square feet of shop floor, removal of all services within the demise back to the landlord service area, removal and subsequent enabling works of the stairs and lift shafts. The scope also involved the installation of structural steel beams and columns as part of the enabling works.

Kilnbridge worked collaboratively with Westfield London on all interfaces and liaised closely with adjacent stakeholders who occupied adjoining units. The interface works within the main shopping mall were meticulously planned and developed with all stakeholders involved whilst being driven by the Kilnbridge site team.

Due to load restrictions on the shopping centre floors, heavy steel sections were floated over the centre floors on air skids in an innovative solution developed by the Kilnbridge in-house engineering team. Spider cranes were strategically placed in locations where loadings allowed to lift the steels from floor to floor.
