Maidenhead Demolition & Structural Alterations

Location: Maidenhead, Berkshire
Value: £1.4m
Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty
Client: Network Rail
Sector: Rail

Scope of works

The Crossrail Western Route section comprised infrastructure and station enhancements to the existing rail network, undertaken in conjunction with Network Rail. Balfour Beatty Rail appointed Kilnbridge to undertake a key element of the Maidenhead remodelling works – the complete reconstruction of Platform 5 during the 2013 Christmas possession on a full package basis.

The project entailed the complete demolition and removal of 200m of Platform 5 (Bourne Branch) and reconstruction to revised levels and curvature. All Platform works were required to be undertaken during back-to-back 57 hour and 70 hour possessions commencing Christmas Eve 2013, with a partial handback to operator First Great Western 57 hours after commencement which required the station and adjoining platform to return to full operation.

The project required extensive pre-possession planning and ground investigation works by Kilnbridge in close co-operation with BBR and Network Rail. 700m³ of existing brickwork, spoil and obstructions were excavated and removed and replaced with 105 bespoke inverted Tee pre-cast wall units together with new drainage, backfill, copers and surfacing utilising a complex arrangement of road-rail vehicle movements. The project was successfully completed and handed back on time.
