55-93 Knightsbridge

Location: Westminster, London
Value: £200,000
Main Contractor: Sir Robert McAlpine
Client: Cheval Property Holdings Limited
Sector: Residential

Scope of works

Having previously removed the façade retention bases within the basement by conventional methods, Kilnbridge continued their works on this site in Autumn 2020 with the removal of the façade retention at pavement level.

The heavily reinforced foundation strip was over 90m long, 0.80m wide and up to 1.7m high. The foundation was immediately between the A4 carriageway and the pavement, which were kept open throughout the duration of the works..

Due to the sensitive environment, the foundations could not be broken out conventionally. Kilnbridge wire sawed the foundation into 4 tonne blocks, installed and tested lifting plates. Once cut, these blocks were removed off site using a lorry mounted crane to the Kilnbridge recycling facility in Rainham.

Challenges / Achievements

  • All works were carried out whilst both the road and pavement remained fully operational.
  • Implementation of alternative methodology due to sensitive environment
  • Repeat business following previous works to remove façade retention bases by Kilnbridge.
