A14 Bridge Demolition

Location: Huntington, Cambridgeshire
Value: £1.4m
Main Contractor: A14 Integrated Delivery Team
Client: Highways England
Sector: Infrastructure

Scope of works

Kilnbridge were contracted to undertake demolition of a 6-span dual carriageway road bridge made redundant by the new A14 highway project. The bridge spanned over the East Coast rail line, Huntington Railway Station, and B1514 Brampton Road.

The bridge was constructed from post tensioned reinforced concrete, with additional heavy-duty structural steelwork elements which were introduced as strengthening part way through the lifespan of the bridge.

The project included removal of the following key elements :

  • 6 sections of RC / PT dual carriageway bridge deck
  • Twenty 7-10m high RC support piers which form the five pier lines.
  • Two RC abutments
  • Heavy-duty structural steel bracing

The project was particularly challenging due to the close proximity of the live rail and highway infrastructure. Whilst undertaking works in these areas Kilnbridge worked hand in hand with the client and stakeholders to plan, manage, and safely undertake both rail and highway possession works in a timely and considerate manner.

Challenges / Achievements

  • High levels of collaboration with client and stakeholders
  • An in-house multidisciplinary team to determine the optimal sequencing of the works
