Cambridge North Station

Location: Cambridge
Value: £6.2m
Main Contractor: Volker Fitzpatrick
Client: Network Rail
Sector: Rail

Scope of works

This project entailed the construction of a new station and interchange next to Cambridge science and business parks.
Kilnbridge’s scope consisted of the following:

Construction of a 450m² building space (comprised of passenger waiting facilities, toilets, a staffed ticket office, retail and amenity space, rail staff accommodation and facilities).

Construction of the reinforced collision protection areas of the two main line platforms (270m in length and capable of accommodating a 12-car train) and a bay platform.

Design, fabrication and installation of a 27m, 40 tonne pedestrian/cycle bridge linking the station building and platforms over the main line (via lift and stair access) and all distinctive architectural cladding and glazing throughout.

Fabrication and installation of the structural steel 1000 capacity cycle parking shelter which also supported the photovoltaic solar panels to help power the new station

Associated rail infrastructure works to facilitate the operation of the railway station.

Kilnbridge were engaged at the Grip 4 design stage; this provided an opportunity to work closely with the client’s engineers to develop and detail the delivery of the structural steelwork for the main station and connecting footbridges along with the supply and installation of precast concrete, architectural glazing, cladding and roof works.

Challenges / Achievements

  • In-house delivery of a combined package of works which reduced possessions and added value in a live railway environment
  • Off-site prefabrication of pedestrian bridge in multiple sections which were then installed on-site in a single possession
