Crossrail – Whitechapel Station

Location: Whitechapel, London
Value: £12.9m
Main Contractor: BBMV JV & BNK JV
Client: Crossrail Ltd
Sector: Rail

Scope of works

Kilnbridge completed the controlled demolition of a number of significant bridge structures which spanned the station to enable the construction of the new concourse and access structures. Temporary works were designed and installed in-house with the intention to support the structure and cut it into craneable sections for removal off-site

Kilnbridge were also appointed to create openings (adits) in the completed tunnel shaft walls to link these to newly formed shafts. On this element of the works 19 adits in 5 locations which ranged from 5m to 13m in diameter were formed using a range of specialist concrete cutting methods.

These works required in excess of 5,000m of stitch drilling and 2,000m2 of wire sawing.

Other works included deconstructing a 60m long by 2.7m wide retaining wall running parallel to a live London Overground platform and carrying out wire sawing, diamond coring and hydraulic bursting as well as removal of concrete waler beams.

Challenges / Achievements

  • Deconstruction of large structures adjacent to operational railway lines using cut and lift methods
  • Design and installation of bespoke temporary works systems to support the structures and cut into craneable sections, which allowed for more hold points and de-risked the possessions
