Devonport SRC

Location: Plymouth
Value: £6.0m
Main Contractor: Kilnbridge
Client: Babcock International

Scope of works

Kilnbridge were contracted in the role of Principal Contractor and also as Designer, as defined under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015. This project entailed the demolition of a 45m high concrete structure that was located in a live MOD nuclear facility in close proximity to two 25m structures within 1m on either side. The works involved designing and constructing a complex temporary works scheme to allow the structure to be demolished from the top down with minimal disturbance to the surrounding area.

The proposed methodology for the removal of the Submarine Refit Complex (SRC) pedestal comprised of a combination of breaking and crunching using Brokk 400s, track sawing, wire sawing, core drilling and hydraulic bursting. In order to facilitate the demolition works, Kilnbridge developed and design a complex temporary works scheme.

Challenges / Achievements

  • Development of bespoke travelling demolition screens, which moved on hydraulic jacks as the work progressed and stopped the escape of dust, debris and noise
  • Design and installation of substantial crash decks which were built off-site to reduce on-site assembly and programme
