Main Contractor: Canary Wharf Contractors
Client: Canary Wharf Group
Sector: Residential

Scope of works

The Newfoundland development is a 60 storey residential tower with 611 apartments, 3 basement levels, an annexe building and associated public realm. The site is situated in a prominent location at the west end of the Canary Wharf. As part of the development, Kilnbridge were appointed to safely remove three structures, Park Place, 1 and 7 Heron Quays, to enable the construction of the residential tower.

The scope of works for 1 and 7 Heron Quays was to remove the ground floor structure which was situated over water and supported on marine piles. Additionally, Kilnbridge removed two piles to a level of 5m below the water surface. A floating pontoon deck was installed to the underside of the structure which provided a working platform and aided in preventing any water contamination. The methodology for the removal of the structure was to deconstruct it by cutting the slab and beams into sections and propping them off the pile caps. Once propped and cut, Kilnbridge lifted the sections out using a 200 tonne mobile crane.

The Park Place works consisted of removing a ground floor slab and basement slab with a footprint of approximately 1,000m². This building was built up against the dock wall with the ground floor slab spanning onto the dock wall. The cantilevered slab was removed by cutting it into sections and lifting it using the mobile crane.
