Main Contractor: Balfour Beatty
Client: Environmental Agency
Business Units: Fire Protection

Scope of works

The Thames Barrier is one of the largest movable flood barriers in the world. It is an operational facility managed by the Environmental Agency (EA), and consists of a purpose-built structure spanning the River Thames with ancillary buildings on the north and south shores. There are two up and down river service / access tunnels (each approximately 520 m long) running under the river linking the shores.

Kilnbridge were engaged as the Specialist Fire Protection Contractor (SFPC) and were required to undertake digital surveys to assess the existing up and down river tunnels’ passive fire protection assets, and develop/produce compliant details for the infrastructure upgrade works. The scope included the design, supply and installation of new Durasteel compartment walls and enclosures, new fire rated metal doorsets and new fire stopping measures throughout the barrier.

Following completion of the design phase, KCSL successfully undertook the installation over a 6-month programme working closely with the EA, Principal Contractor, and Principal Designer. The project was completed on time and on budget with KCSL winning several awards for Health & Safety and Quality, as well as a regional award for our regular observation reporting.
