Thames Tideway Chambers Wharf

Location: Bermondsey, London
Value: £2.3m
Main Contractor: Costain Vinci Bachy JV
Client: Thames Tideway
Sector: Infrastructure

Scope of works

Kilnbridge were appointed as a specialist subcontractor in the delivery of the new Thames Tideway scheme located at the tunnel drive shaft site in Bermondsey. The scope of works entailed undertaking the initial shaft excavation to -6m AOD within strict archaeological constraints. The works also included the demolition of the D-walls which were deconstructed whilst adhering to strict noise, vibration and dust constraints due the proximity of local residents.

In addition, Kilnbridge undertook the construction of two reinforced concrete capping beams for the shaft and air treatment unit. Kilnbridge also carried out the enabling works for the acoustic shed and gantry crane which involved over 1,500m³ of concrete pilecaps and ground beams for the newly constructed cofferdam.

Kilnbridge worked collaboratively with CVB JV in phasing and developing the programme staging to provide expediency and allow the unplanned work interfaces by others to be completed simultaneously and thus reduce and de-risk the critical path.
Embracing Tideway’s safety standards, Kilnbridge also proactively engaged with CVB JV to deliver safety presentations and innovative systems to improve site safety and successfully delivered the project with zero Lost Time Incidents (LTIs).

Challenges / Achievements

  • Designed a bespoke acoustic tent, founded at the bottom of a 3m deep excavation, and encapsulated the work area
  • Excavation undertaken around tidal times
  • Value engineered solution through the in-house Concrete Cutting & Controlled Demolition business to significantly lower noise output
