Wood Wharf – Water Street Bridge

Location: Canary Wharf, London
Value: £4.7m
Main Contractor: Canary Wharf Contractors
Client: Canary Wharf Group
Sector: Infrastructure

Scope of works

The project entailed the construction of the Water Street Causeway and both bridge abutments to enable the installation of a single leaf bascule bridge connecting Montgomery Street and Wood Wharf.

Kilnbridge delivered this project, now known as Water Street Bridge, through a number of in-house businesses and support hubs, including design, detailing and fabrication of all temporary Works.

In view of the restricted access to the site, Kilnbridge set-up a temporary on-site pre-cast concrete yard to manufacture and install 40 tonne precast panels

Kilnbridge’s scope also included the installation of precast U-beams, precast planks, precast split edge beams and in-situ toppings to tie all elements together using a 160 tonne crawler crane tracked on a fabricated steel grillage. The advantage of the grillage system was to avoid using a crane on a barge and four support vessels which would have been required in that situation. The adopted Kilnbridge cranage solution had a far lesser environmental impact with reduced CO2 emissions.
